Therdra and a darker side

Again another fun contest has popped up over at Confessions From Suite 500.  I thought today it might be fun to  give them a taste of Mistress Therdra.  Hope you enjoy as well.

Todays challenge was the following.  100 words or less using the following words (Personal, Demons, Sin, Hellbent, Original) and the phrase (A devil's own.)

Therdra's yellow eyes glowed brightly as the magical lifeforce called the 'bredth' was removed from her latest victim.  She spoke to him and a devil's own tongue could not have stole his courage with greater adeptness.  Her raspy voice forced into his mind leaving little room for original thought.

"I have but one personal request from your sin laden mouth.  Tell me where the one they call the 'Risen' is hiding."  Mistress Therdra was hellbent on finding her nemesis and destroying her.  Only then could Therdra's demons destroy the Brethen people.

The man gasped his final words, "I don't know!"

Entry two:  ( for fun I will also post a rather gloomy/dark one)

A devil's own tongue could not have stole my sin filled mind with better guile.  The demons within me tugged at my desires for her and diminish my resolve.  It left me with little room for original thought and I dare not seek it.  A slave to her magnificence and inspired by her kindness, I would trudge a through a thousand lifetimes to be with her once more.  It was a hellbent scheme, I realize now, but as the blade found its home my own personal needs ebbed into a void of blackness.

First Paragraph Writing Contest

Another writing contest, this time over at Nathan Bransford's Blog.  I would encourage any and all to take a look at his site.  He is a very consistant and fun to read blogger, with plenty of inside scoops into the litery world.
The contest is quite simple, just cut and paste your first paragraph from the manuscript you have in progress.  A winner is selected from the scads that enter and a prize is then awarded, along with all the accolades of winning said contest.  The reward is non other than a partial manuscript read from his agent.  So basically it will help the winner get past the query step, sorta.  :P  At any rate, it looked fun, so off to submit.
Below is the entry I made:
Sam Hauser staggered over to the water container, filled the rusty ladle and took a swig.  The prisoners were allowed three rest periods throughout the course of the day.  This was his morning break and he already looked forward to the lunch break still several hours away.  Maybe it was the unusual amount of dust that wisped about his face that tired him.  He took another drink and moved over to the bench that ran alongside the water cooler.  His arms were aching pretty badly and he kept his head lowered to try and shield his eyes from the intense sun that swept across the site.  It was going to be a hard day.

Winners Annouced

The results of the writing contest are in over at Confessions from Suite 500.  Congratulations on the winning entry by Alex.  Yours truly was nominated for best character names.  Heh, well it's a start; I'm happy to even be mentioned amongst such talented folks.  On another personal note worth mentioning, I believe I'm only one chapter away from completion of the first book in the Protect the Risen series.  Then of course the long process of tweeking, editing and clipping begins.  I'm hoping to have a working manuscipt by the holidays end.

wer-mer-bear contest

I entered a little writing contest over at Confessions from suite 500.  It is a terrific blog and I would encourage everyone to take a peek.  They have some great advice for writers, as well as some terrific taste in books.
The contest was to use a few simple words they provide and come up with a story for them.  The catch is that it needed to stay under the limit of one hundred words.  Here are the words that had to be included: Sky, Light, Betrayal, Pee Wee, and Wings.  They also said that the writer would get extra points for working the phrase "Beware the wer-mer-bear."  So we'll see how I did, I'll let you all know how I faired when the event closes this thursday.  Below is what I entered.  Let me know how you think I did.

It was nearly noon, when from high in the sky above the Fine Light Army, flying on leathery wings was an ominous figure.  Its pee wee body was unmistakable.  Gregern could not believe the betrayal of Stehvan unleashing such a beast upon them.
“Beware-of-the-wer-mer-bear!”  Gregern yelled.
Towsen replied in a troubled voice.  “Surely this tips the scales of success into Stehvan’s favor.  Shoot it down quickly!”
Gregern unslung the magical anajo from his back and loosed a silvery bolt wounding the vile creature.
“You saved us Gregern, you’re our hero!” Shouted Towsen.
